7-Day Kenya Walking & Camel Safari in Laikipia

Day-by-day itinerary

Route: Nairobi → Laikipia → Camel-Supported Walking Route → Laikipia → Nairobi

1. Day 1

   Nairobi to Laikipia

   Following an early breakfast, the day begins with the road transfer from Nairobi to Laikipia, climbing through the central highlands past Nyeri and Nanyuki on the shoulder of Mount Kenya. Once you reach Laikipia there is time to check in before heading out among open Laikipia plains and whistling-thorn country with Mount Kenya on the eastern skyline. Your guide works the area for black and white rhino, elephant, lion, buffalo and Jackson's hartebeest, with sightings varying by season and conditions. Ol Pejeta is a working conservancy with a significant rhino conservation programme, and it also runs a chimpanzee sanctuary that takes in rescued animals. Your safari vehicle and guide are used by your party alone. The evening is spent at your Laikipia accommodation, with dinner and overnight there.

2. Day 2

   Laikipia to Camel-Supported Walking Route

   Breakfast is taken before you set out from Laikipia for the drive to Camel-Supported Walking Route. On arrival at Camel-Supported Walking Route you check in and the remainder of the day is at a relaxed pace. The drive is broken with stops to stretch, and timings are approximate rather than fixed. You return for dinner and an overnight stay at Camel-Supported Walking Route.

3. Day 3

   Camel-Supported Walking Route to Laikipia

   Bags are loaded after breakfast and you depart Camel-Supported Walking Route bound for Laikipia, climbing through the central highlands past Nyeri and Nanyuki on the shoulder of Mount Kenya. Lunch and check-in come first, then an afternoon drive through open Laikipia plains and whistling-thorn country with Mount Kenya on the eastern skyline. There is the possibility of seeing black and white rhino, elephant, lion, buffalo and Jackson's hartebeest, depending on movement and conditions on the day. 4. Day 4

   Laikipia to Nairobi

   Breakfast is taken before you set out from Laikipia for the drive to Nairobi, returning through the highland approaches to the city. Once you reach Nairobi there is time to check in before heading out among Kenya's highland capital and the usual start and end point for road safaris. Nairobi is the arrival and departure hub for most Kenyan safari itineraries. The evening is spent at your Nairobi accommodation, with dinner and overnight there.

5. Day 5

   Full-Day Nairobi Safari

   You have a complete day in Nairobi, starting early while the air is still cool and animals are active. The drives cover Kenya's highland capital and the usual start and end point for road safaris, moving between habitats as conditions change. Nairobi is the arrival and departure hub for most Kenyan safari itineraries. Depending on the plan for the day, lunch is served at camp or packed to eat in the field. You return to your camp or lodge for dinner and a second night at Nairobi.

6. Day 6

   Full-Day Nairobi Safari

   The day is set aside for Nairobi, with drives timed around the first and last hours of light. Much of the day is spent among Kenya's highland capital and the usual start and end point for road safaris. Nairobi is the arrival and departure hub for most Kenyan safari itineraries. Depending on the plan for the day, lunch is served at camp or packed to eat in the field. The evening returns you to your Nairobi accommodation for dinner and overnight.

7. Day 7

   Laikipia to Nairobi

   The day opens in Laikipia with a morning departure for Nairobi, returning through the highland approaches to the city. Arrival is followed by check-in and a first drive into Kenya's highland capital and the usual start and end point for road safaris. Nairobi is the arrival and departure hub for most Kenyan safari itineraries. Arrival back is normally in the afternoon, with a drop-off at your hotel or the airport.
