5-Day Mount Kilimanjaro Marangu Route

Tanzania5 daysmountain climb

Journey overview

Climb Mount Kilimanjaro by the Marangu Route on a compact five-day hut-based itinerary. The route ascends and descends the same eastern trail, moving from rainforest through moorland and alpine desert to Kibo Hut before a pre-dawn summit attempt on Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres.

The five-day version omits the usual acclimatisation day at Horombo, making it a demanding schedule with a rapid altitude gain. It should be sold honestly as the shortest standard Marangu summit programme rather than as the easiest way to climb Kilimanjaro.

Day-by-day itinerary

  1. Day 1

    Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut

Complete Kilimanjaro National Park registration at Marangu Gate and begin trekking through the rainforest toward Mandara Hut. Keep the first day steady and use the evening for hydration, rest and the guide’s health checks.

  2. Day 2

    Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut

Leave the forest and climb through heath and moorland toward Horombo Hut. The altitude increase is significant, so the group should maintain a controlled pace.

  3. Day 3

    Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut

Cross the high alpine-desert saddle toward Kibo Hut. Rest early after arrival because the summit attempt begins during the night.

  4. Day 4

Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak and Horombo Hut

Begin the summit attempt before dawn, climbing toward Gilman’s Point and continuing along the crater rim toward Uhuru Peak only if weather, altitude response and guide judgment allow. After the summit attempt, descend past Kibo to Horombo Hut.

  5. Day 5

    Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate

Descend through the moorland and rainforest to Marangu Gate. Complete park formalities and connect with the confirmed onward transfer.

Safari FAQs

No. Marangu is Kilimanjaro’s main hut-based route.

Does the five-day version include an acclimatisation day?

No. That is the main difference from the common six-day version.

Is reaching Uhuru Peak guaranteed?

No. Altitude response, health, weather and guide judgment can require a turnaround.

Is Marangu technically difficult?

It is a non-technical trekking route, but high altitude makes it physically demanding.
